Wars of Today

I feel really sad with all these wars happening these days. Maybe we do not hear about all the wars on the news, but they still are occurring every day. World War II was supposed to be the end of all wars. However, wars still continue on. Every year on November 11th people around the world commemorate Remembrance Day or Veterans Day to remember the past and honor those who died in World War I. In spite of people remembering the past, the wars still continue on. What do you think about the wars of today?

“Life’s not about finding yourself. Life’s about creating yourself.”

I came across this quote the other day by George Bernard Shaw, and it really got me thinking. We all have the opportunity to be anyone we want to be, but sometimes those opportunities are missed for a number of reasons. One reason is the way we spend our time. Time is something that is so important, but we never seem to have enough of it. However, every day, we have the same amount of time as yesterday, and we choose how to use that time. With that in mind, if we use our time wisely, we can accomplish so much. It may seem hard at first, but determination and perseverance will go a long way.

The Power of Ideas

 Ideas are everywhere around us.
An idea is like a seed, if you water it, give it sunlight, and nurture it, it will grow.
You can choose to plant the seed, will you?

TOMS: The One for One shoe everyone loves

One shoe that has recently increased in popularity by shoe-lovers all around is TOMS. TOMS (an abbreviation for tomorrow) was founded in 2006, and has stated that for every pair of TOMS shoes sold, they will give one to a child in need (one for one). The company has expanded to not only selling the classic, versatile, alpagarta slip on shoe, but now also sells boots and cordones (oxfords) for both men and women. I think that this company has a great idea, but is it really worth the price? Yes, because you are buying the shoes one goes to a child in need, but are the shoes really worth it? Contrary to what some stores may tell you, TOMS actually do go on sale, especially the seasonal ones. Try waiting a few weeks before you purchase the ones you see on display and you might get a good deal. However, in spite of the value, with the increase in popularity and the introduction of new styles, TOMS won’t be going anywhere for a while.

The 2012 Presidential Election

Whether you are living in America or not, I’m sure you must have heard of the upcoming American Presidential Election. The Current Democrat President, Obama, is running against the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney. With the election only a few weeks away, some of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates have taken place and they have surprised many including Big Bird from Sesame Street! So what do you think; are the Democrats going to win again or will the Republicans come into power?

Have Faith in your Dreams

Did you ever not get something you really wanted? And no, I don’t mean those really expensive shoes you begged your parents for. I’m talking about a job, a position, membership to a club, a test mark…it could be anything that holds importance to you. It may have made you feel really bad when that thing did not come easily to you. Perhaps you didn’t do any work and were just hoping for the best, or maybe you worked really hard and still you didn’t achieve what you wanted. This feeling inside you can be very sad but it doesn’t have to be that way. Sure it’s something to be upset about, but you have to see where you went wrong and what you can do for the next time. Always have faith in your dreams. There’s a saying, when one door closes, two more open. So if you keep on staring at the closed door, you’ll miss all the other opportunities around you. And now for the cheesy, Chef Gusteau, Ratatouille reference: “If you focus on what you’ve left behind, you will never be able to see what lies ahead.”

The New iPhone

Last week Apple Inc. announced their newest iPhone, the iPhone 5. This newer, sleeker model of the iPhone is set to be released on September 21st. It has various different features upgraded from its previous generation, the iPhone 4S. It seems like a lot of phones these days are much slimmer and also have a larger screen. Samsung also released a new phone, the Galaxy S3, a couple months ago which is also quite slim and versatile. Which do you prefer, iPhone 5 or Galaxy S3?

Back to the Usual

Whether you are back to the office, school or any other workplace, there is no doubt summer is over. It is quite difficult to get back into your usual routine, however after a few weeks the feeling should go away and everything should go back to normal. It must be really difficult for people to have no summer at all and for that reason I am thankful that I get a few weeks to just relax. If you are having trouble getting back to your usual routine or simply miss summer, I find taking full advantage of the weekend or any other holiday really helps. Try to get all your work done on Friday so that you can have the rest of the weekend to just kick back. Also during the week, if the weather is nice, try to finish your work early or during lunch break so you can take advantage of the awesome weather and some fresh air. How do you cope with summer being over?

Apple Juice: Is it Just a Fruit Beverage?

Ahh, the classic, thirst quenching, apple juice. This fruit juice has been around for a very long time and is absolutely delicious. Apple juice can be made from a variety of different apples producing slightly different tastes by various brands. However, is apple juice just an old fruit beverage? I think there’s more to apple juice than what meets the eye. This golden juice has vitamin C in it and is a much healthier alternative to other beverages such as soda. Also apple juice is 100% pure juice. So is apple juice a juice for you, or do you prefer another fruit juice?

Potatoes and pizza

Recently I’ve had two delicious and unique foods: one is called a potato tornado (left) and the other is a pide (right). The potato tornado is no ordinary fried snack, it was cut in a way that all the slices are connected and then it is seasoned with your favourite flavorings. This unique dish may seem typical but it’s a great alternative to fries. The other food is a Turkish pizza called pide. It’s a flat-bread dough pizza with toppings such as meat, cheese, vegetables and spices. Just writing about it makes my mouth water!

A blast of the past: skinny ties and thick glasses

It seems like the 1960’s has returned with more and more people wearing skinny ties and thick glasses. Skinny ties can be worn for dressy occasions but also for more casual events like school. Thick glasses have also come back in style. Some people who do not even wear glasses choose to wear non-prescription frames. I guess it’s true when people say fashion repeats itself. So do you follow trends, or do you choose your own style?

What are we Watching These Days?

It occurred to me, what are we watching these days? TV can be educational, entertaining and sometimes pointless, but I am talking about our entertainment shows. In the not so old shows like Full House, Lizzie McGuire and That’s so Raven, you may actually learn a lesson or two. But now it’s rare when you are staring at the screen and have one of those “aha, that’s really true” moments. TV shows not too long ago used to be more family oriented, focusing on a family and their problems. As well how they work together to solve their issues or growing up, coping with each other and getting through their days. The shows seemed more real. Nowadays, the shows are not really like that. I mean sure, you have some like Good Luck Charlie and Life with Boys that can be more relatable, but mostly all the shows these days are about music, relationships, pop stars, and wizards. These shows are funny but are they missing something? What do you think, is what we are watching these days actually worth watching?

The End of iCarly and Victorious

This November, Nickelodeon will be airing the series finale of iCarly, an Emmy nominated, five year long running show about a girl and her two best friends that make a popular web show that stars Miranda Cosgrove as Carly, Jennette McCurdy as Sam, Nathan Kress as Fredie, Jerry Trainor as Spencer and Noah Munck as Gibby. It’s hard to believe that a show that seems like it’s been around forever is finally ending. The iCarly gang will say their goodbyes in a finale premiering in November. Another Nickelodeon show that is surprisingly ending is Victorious. Victorious is about a group of talented students who attend Hollywood Arts that stars Victoria Justice as Tori, Leon Thomas III as Andre, Avan Jogia as Back, Ariana Grande as Cat, Matt Bennett as Robbie, Elizabeth Gillies as Jade and Danielle Monet as Trina. Currently there is no finale date. Although these shows are ending, Schneider’s Bakery, the company that produces the shows, is cooking up two new potential spin-off series called Gibby and Sam & Cat.

Rags and Shake it Up: Made in Japan

Rags and Shake it Up: Made in Japan are two recent movies about teens on their way to stardom. Rags is a twist on the Cinderella story and stars Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP), Max Schneider (How to Rock), Avan Jogia (Victorious) and Drake Bell (Drake and Josh). Kadee Worth (Palmer) is a pop star who’s on top of all the charts, but something doesn’t feel right. Charlie Prince, the janitor at Majesty Records (Schneider) helps her realize that it is more important to be yourself, instead of pretending to be someone you are not. Together the two of them made each other’s dreams come true.

Shake it Up: Made in Japan stars Zendaya and Bella Thorne (Shake it Up). Rocky (Zendaya) and Cece (Thorne) have an opportunity of a lifetime when the Shake it Up dance crew wins the chance to go to Japan and star in a dancing video game. Cece hoping to be discovered in Japan and become famous feels downed by Rocky who wants to explore Japan for its culture and scenery. The two friends run into some conflicts but in the end pull through and solve their problems along with Ty (Roshon Fegan), Gunther (Kenton Duty), Tinka (Caroline Sunshine), and Flynn (Davis Cleavland).

Shake it Up: Made in Japan was funny and also had some unexpected elements in it. Compared to Rags, Shake it Up: Made in Japan was different and original. Although Rags was quite Comedic as well, Shake it Up: Made in Japan was overall more exciting. However, both these movies suggest that with hard work, and if you truly believe, your dreams will come true.

Kids with iPads

I’m sure you must have heard of the iPad before, it is the tablet by Apple. Recently I’ve noticed that a lot of people have iPads, specifically kids. The iPad is great for education, and gaming as well. What I have noticed is that kids are becoming more hooked on technology at a very young age. It seems as if some kids are almost addicted to technology and they need tablets and iPods to keep entertained. I mean when I was a kid I was not playing on tablets and phones, I was playing with Lego. However, that is not to say that kids should not use technology. I think that it’s great that kids are becoming more technologically advanced which will greatly benefit them in our “tech-y” society, but in the long run will playing on a tablet be more beneficial than playing outside? It’s important to establish a balance. Yes, allow kids to play with technology and get used to it, but also allow them to be kids and enjoy the little things like playing at the park and playing with action figures.

Color Washed Jeans: What do you think?

It seems like this summer is a bright one. Not only because of the sandy, sunny beaches people go to for vacation, but also because of the new trend: bright colorful jeans. Colorful jeans are available at practically all of your favorite stores, but some have more colors available than others. Some people may think colorful jeans are great. They make you stand out from the crowd and can really jazz up a dull day. These jeans are great for guys and girls, but can everyone pull off the look. I have to say sometimes the jeans do look tacky, but other times they look awesome. So what do you think, are colorful jeans for you?

Is Time Passing by Too Fast?

Do you ever feel like time is passing by too fast? I mean it seems like it was last summer only yesterday, and another year has already passed by. Like all years, important decisions must be made. Sometimes I like to look back at my childhood and remember all the fun times I had. Sometimes, I wished that I could be more independent, and now my wish came true. Not that it is a bad thing but sometimes all this decision making and responsibility can get to your head. All this is making me think, where has the time gone? Have I been making the right decisions?

Well it’s too late to turn back now, what’s done is done. I can’t change the past, neither can you. We cannot stop time either, we have to keep on moving. But we’ve made it through this far and we seem to be doing great so I guess we are ready.

As time goes by, we may begin to miss the way things were when we were younger. But we do not have to forget those times as we can cherish those moments and always keep them in our hearts. Growing up and change is not a bad thing, it’s just going to take some time to get used to. So instead of running away from this inescapable reality, let’s embrace it and see what we can become.
